How to Be Fuel-Efficient When Driving

When you make your daily commute in the Bay Area, “how to be fuel-efficient” is probably at the top of your mind. MINI vehicles are fuel-efficient by nature with their TwinPower Turbo engines, but when you practice fuel-efficient driving habits in San Francisco, you can maximize those fuel economy specs! Pick up some new tips for how to be fuel-efficient with the team at East Bay MINI Service Center, below.

Top 6 Fuel-Efficient Driving Habits

What are the fuel-efficient driving habits of seasoned Oakland commuters who know how to spend as little time and money at the pump as possible? Check out our top six tips:

    1. Pick Up Speed Steadily: We know how fun it is to hit the gas and accelerate quickly on an open road, but the harder you press the gas pedal, the more fuel you’re using. When you accelerate gently and allow about five seconds to reach 10 mph from 0, you’ll conserve more fuel.
    2. Plan Ahead for Traffic: It’s difficult to avoid traffic in the Bay Area, but if you can plan your routes around it, you’ll stand a better chance at using less fuel. Stop-and-go traffic is perhaps the biggest fuel-suck out there, and it strains your drivetrain on top of it. Try to avoid rush hour the best you can, and leave 15 minutes early when you know you’re headed toward a congested area.
    3. Avoid High Speeds: You burn a lot more fuel when traveling at high speeds. The most fuel-efficient speed to maintain on the highway is between 55 mph and 65 mph. Of course, you should always follow the posted speed limit and keep up with the flow of traffic to stay safe.
    4. Coast to a Stop: Try to avoid tapping the brakes constantly. Monitor the traffic ahead of you so you can start coasting to a stop when the cars ahead are braking. By slowing down naturally and gently pressing the brake pedal when it’s time, you’ll save more fuel.
    5. How to Save Fuel While Driving on Hills: Nowhere is this more relevant than here in the Bay Area! San Francisco is famous for its steep roadways, but if you reduce your speed while traveling uphill and allow your car’s momentum to help you coast downhill, you can conserve fuel while making the trek.
    6. Run the Air Conditioning Sparingly: We all know that running the air conditioning wastes fuel, but some days you just can’t avoid it. Using the air conditioning can cause up to a 20% uptick in your car’s fuel usage, but you can help lower that percentage by using the recirculate function rather than running cold air at full-blast.
