How to Check Tire Pressure

Maintaining proper tire pressure is crucial for several reasons: it extends the life of your tires, ensures a comfortable driving experience in San Francisco, helps with steering response, and maintains good fuel economy. If your tires are overinflated or underinflated, it can result in excessive tire wear or a dangerous blowout. Knowing how to check tire pressure is important because it’s how you’ll know you have low tire pressure before it’s too late. East Bay MINI Service Center provides everything you need to know about tire pressure, below!

What is the Proper Tire Pressure for My Vehicle?

Do you know what the recommended tire pressure is for your car? Whether you’re driving a MINI vehicle or another type of vehicle, this information will be listed in your owner’s manual. It’s important to know the proper tire pressure so you don’t over or underfill your tires. Often, the front and rear tires have different recommended tire pressures.

What is a Tire Pressure Monitoring System?

If you’re driving a newer vehicle in Oakland, learning how to check tire pressure might be as simple as checking your digital cluster display! These days, many new vehicles are equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that shows a visual display of the current tire pressure for all four tires. It’s a quick and easy way to know if one or more of your tires has low tire pressure and needs to be filled. Many TPMS’s will even tell you if a tire is losing air at a rapid rate, indicating a flat.

How to Check Tire Pressure with a Tire Pressure Gauge

If your vehicle doesn’t have a TPMS, learning how to check tire pressure is still pretty simple! All you need is a tire pressure gauge, which can be purchased for at-home use or accessed at most gas stations around Livermore. If you’re relying on the gas station, the tire pressure gauge should be located at the air compressor station in the parking lot. Here’s how to check tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge:

  1. Make sure your tires are cold to start (the heat generated by friction when driving could cause an inaccurate tire pressure reading, so you should avoid checking the tire pressure immediately after driving).
  2. Double-check your owner’s manual for the recommended tire pressure if you’ve forgotten (it often helps to make a note of the correct tire pressure for each tire so you can reference it as you check them).
  3. Remove the valve cap from the tire you want to start with – don’t lose it! Place the tire pressure gauge on the tire’s valve stem and apply pressure until you no longer hear the “hiss” sound. If the gauge is digital, it will show your tire pressure reading on a screen. If it’s non-digital, a small bar with measurement lines will push out of the other end of the gauge.
  4. Repeat the above for all four tires, writing down their tire pressure readings as you go.
  5. If any of your tires have low tire pressure, you can fill them up with an air compressor at home or visit the gas station. Check the tire pressure once more afterward to be sure you haven’t overfilled them.

It’s recommended that you check your tire pressure once per month to keep them in good condition.
